Unit 5 - Statistics and Probability

Unit Objectives
Prior Knowledge:
  • Calculate probabilities of single and double events.
  • Construct and use tree diagrams and Venn diagrams
  • Know formulae for probability with equally likely outcomes and for the complement of an event.
By the end of this unit students should be able to:
  • Understand concepts of population, sample, random sample and frequency distribution of discrete and continuous data.
  • Calculate and interpret mean, variance and standard deviation
  • Use grouped data, mid-interval values, interval width, upper and lower interval boundaries.
  • Construct and interpret statistical diagrams, including: Histogram, Cumulative Frequency graph, box plot.
  • Understand concepts of trial, outcome, equally likely outcomes, sample space and event
  • Use of tree and Venn diagrams, counting principles and tables to solve problems of probability
  • Solve problems of combined events
  • Understand the concepts of mutually exclusivity and independence and solve problems involving them
  • Solve problems of conditional probability
  • Use Bayes Theorem
